Aston Villa transfers: Barcelona exit, Rangers goal machine contract and another signing

Aston Villa may be out of action until Boxing Day but the club will surely already be plotting for the January transfer window.

Unai Emery had been in charge for just two weeks prior to the World Cup break, though the Spanish coach did successfully mastermind two league wins to have fans looking up the table once again after initially flirting with a relegation battle under Steven Gerrard. The four-time Europa League winner has already outlined his aims to get Villa back into Europe, much to the delight of supporters.

In order to achieve their ambitions, Villa will have to utilise the transfer market effectively and attention has already turned to who Emery may sign in the January transfer window. As the New Year slowly approaches, Villa have increasingly been linked with new signings, here’s a round-up of the latest transfer reports.

Coach makes Thuram admission

Villa have been one of several Premier League clubs linked with Borussia Monchengladbach striker Marcus Thuram. The France international, who is currently part of the country’s squad in Qatar, has managed to register 13 goals and four assists in 18 games for his club this term.

However, the 25-year-old’s contract is due to expire in the summer and Gladbach assistant coach Oliver Neuville has admitted that the club face a battle to keep him. “I think it will be difficult for him to stay at Gladbach because if he continues to score so many goals it is certain that he will have many offers in Italy or Spain or England. You also have to be a bit realistic.” he said.

Kessie looking for Barcelona exit

Franck Kessie was a pivotal part of AC Milan’s midfield for several seasons before opting to join Barcelona as a free agent this summer. Though it has not exactly gone to plan for the Ivory Coast international so far, making just two league starts.

It is claimed that a move to England could be on the cards for Kessie. Reports in Italy have suggested that the 25-year-old may be looking for a swift solution in January, with Villa named among his potential suitors.

Battle won for youth prospect

Villa have made it their mission to snap up top youth prospects in recent years. The club acted swiftly to sign top-rated youngsters Rory Wilson, Kerr Smith and Josh Feeney, with the Youth Cup success in 2021 highlighting Villa’s commitment to their academy.

Linfield winger Cole Brannigan is the latest player set to arrive at Bodymoor Heath in the summer, according to the Belfast Telegraph . The 16-year-old has previously been linked with Manchester City, Chelsea and Leeds.

Wilson agrees new deal

Much was made of the news when Villa managed to sign Rangers starlet Rory Wilson in the summer. The young striker arrived for a reported £350,000 after a phenomenal season saw the 16-year-old score 49 goals for club and country.

The Daily Record reports that the teenager is set to sign his first professional deal in the New Year. Wilson recently made the step up to the club’s under-21 side and provided a goal and assist in two appearances.
