Graham Potter reviews Liverpool draw

Graham Potter’s Chelsea are the biggest spenders of the January transfer window by some distance but are remarkably still actively prowling the maket for more additions.

This may be due to the lack of faith both Potter and those at the top of the Stamford Bridge hierarchy may have in the current crop of struggling Blues stars to turn things around. Chelsea currently sit as low as 10th in the Premier League table, an astonishing 21 points behind league-leaders and fellow big-six side Arsenal.

Though some of the new recruits have already made a positive start to their time in West London, with the likes of Mykhaylo Mudryk and Benoit Badiashile enjoying promising debuts, Chelsea still feel there is further business to be done if they are to stand any chance of securing European football next term.

With that being said, Mirror Football has identified some of the main transfer talking points focused on Chelsea with the deadline creeping closer.

Caicedo sends transfer message

Chelsea have already seen one bid for Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo rejected earlier on this month, with their £55million offer swiftly rejected by the Seagulls.

It now looks unlikely they will land his signature at all, regardless of a second bid, if Caicedo’s recent comments on how happy he is at the Amex are anything to go by.

“I am focused on Brighton, I am here, I’m playing every day. Things from outside don’t trouble me, nor does it take that focus away because I’m focused only on here,” the 21-year-old told Brighton website.

“I handle [the speculation] well. You hear rumours here and there, but I only try to be focused on the club where I am now, the club which opened the doors for me to be playing every week.”

Fernandez rumours rumble on

Much like the Caicedo situation, Chelsea are rumoured to have already had one bid for Benfica star Enzo Fernandez rejected after failing to meet his release clause.

The Blues’ efforts to try and lure the Argentina international and World Cup winner only angered the Portuguese giants, who claimed the West Londoners were being disrespectful in their pursuit.

Regardless, unlike Caicedo, Fernandez his rumoured to have made clear to the Benfica hierarchy he wants to make the move to the Premier League. Their response was clear, unless Chelsea activate his release clause, the midfielder is going nowhere any time soon.

This looks like a deal that could rumble on well into deadline day, watch this space.

UEFA respond to Chelsea transfer activity

The European governing body have closed a loophole which allowed Chelsea to tie down players to extraordinarily long contracts.

The decision has come after other Premier League clubs lodged complaints, as per Mail Sport. Many of the sides that feel aggrieved believe Chelsea are trying to cheat Financial Fair Play regulations.

For example, Potter’s side have used amortisation to spread the cost of Mudryk’s £88m fee over the eight years for accounting purposes. The Ukrainian’s contract is the longest in Premier League history.

The rule change is expected to change the way Chelsea operate in the market under Todd Boehly’s rule.
